The 5 Dials of Connection: The Secret Behind Connected Conversations

by | Communication, Featured

Have you ever been to a concert where something just felt off? The vocals too loud, the bass too heavy, the guitar buried somewhere in the back? Even the best song can sound terrible when the mix isn’t balanced. But when the soundboard is tuned just right, it’s magic. The audience feels it. The connection is electric.

Kris and I have been to more than 110 concerts in our 11 years together, and trust me, we’ve heard it all. The moments when the music gives you goosebumps and the ones where you’re praying the sound tech finds the right dial. The difference between chaos and harmony always comes down to the mix.

That’s exactly how communication works.

Everything I teach comes back to one framework, The Connected Conversations Advantage™. Think of it as your personal communication soundboard. Every conversation you have, whether it’s with your team, your partner, or yourself, runs through this internal mix. And just like a sound engineer, your job is to keep the dials tuned so connection sounds clear, balanced, and magnetic.

Here’s how the five dials work.

1. Aware – Know your tone before you sing

Awareness is your first dial. It’s the ability to know what you’re feeling and what you need before you speak. Without it, you’re basically singing off-key without realizing it. When you pause to check in with yourself, what’s really driving what I’m about to say, what am I feeling, what outcome do I want, you create emotional clarity. That clarity sets the key for every conversation.

2. Express – Turn up your vocals

Expression is about clarity and kindness. It’s how you make others feel heard, seen, and respected, even when the topic is tough. When your expression is strong and authentic, your message cuts through the noise. The goal isn’t to dominate the mic, it’s to make sure the lyrics land.

3. Engage – Blend your voice with others

Engagement is the collaboration dial. It’s built on curiosity, empathy, and openness. Instead of trying to be the loudest voice in the room, you listen for harmony. You ask honest questions. You look for what connects you, not what divides you. The best communicators don’t perform solos, they create duets.

4. Invest – Keep the rhythm steady

This dial is about using emotional intelligence to make conversations productive and purposeful. You invest when you take the time to understand others, ask better questions, and collaborate clearly. When you rush or skip this step, your rhythm falls apart. But when you stay in sync, especially when making decisions, connection feels effortless.

5. Nurture – Let the music flow

Nurture is what keeps the song going when pressure hits. It’s your ability to stay calm, flexible, and grounded. This is where resilience and self-regulation come in. Because even if the song gets loud, the best communicators know how to keep the beat steady.

When all five dials are working together, Aware, Express, Engage, Invest, and Nurture, communication feels like music. It flows. It connects. It moves people.

But when one dial is off, maybe awareness is low, or nurture has gone quiet, connection gets harder. The good news is that you can adjust. Every moment of every conversation gives you a chance to recalibrate and tune back in.

That’s the power of The Connected Conversations Advantage™. It gives you a framework to communicate with intention and emotional intelligence, whether you’re leading a meeting, navigating conflict, or having a heart-to-heart.

Your challenge this week: Notice which dial you tend to overuse or underuse. Are you talking more than listening? Avoiding tough conversations? Rushing decisions? Start there. Turn that dial gently and see how quickly your conversations start sounding, and feeling, more magnetic.

Connection isn’t luck. It’s tuning.
